Women’s History Month: How Survivors are Leading Change and Building Sustainable Futures

By San Francisco SafeHouse Team

March is Women’s History Month, and this year’s theme is “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future.” It highlights the diverse contributions of women advancing sustainability—whether in our environment, economic systems, or in building civic power. This theme celebrates women who are designing the blueprints for sustainable transformation in our communities.

What Leading Change Means for Survivors

As we reflect on this theme, we recognize that “leading change” and “building a sustainable future” can mean different things depending on lived experiences. For women who have experienced homelessness, it can mean breaking cycles of housing instability and creating lasting safety for themselves and future generations.

This month at SafeHouse, we celebrate the women who have graduated from our programs and gone on to lead change in their own lives—building sustainable futures for themselves, their families, and the communities around them!

Survivor Leadership in Action

Women who have experienced homelessness have always carried with them extraordinary strength, wisdom, and leadership. As an organization that has been supporting and empowering survivors for over 27 years, we know this to be true. We are honored to remain an organization that is deeply survivor-centered and survivor-led — where women's voices shape our programs, our priorities, and the future of sustainable housing for survivors in San Francisco.

We know that when survivors have access to safe housing, consistent support, and spaces where they can heal, they thrive. Many return to their communities as leaders, mentors, and peer advocates for other women experiencing homelessness and exploitation. We have had the privilege of watching graduates pursue meaningful paths as a nurse, yoga instructor, pastry chef, and accountant. Others have launched their own interior design business, and one even went on to start a nonprofit—powerful reminders of what is possible when we invest in survivors and ensure they have the same opportunities to lead.

And every day, we witness women navigating and overcoming systemic barriers, leading change for others with shared experiences and helping to build the blueprints for trauma-informed housing, support, and resources for survivors.

This Women’s History Month, and every month, we honor and celebrate the women who are leading change and building sustainable futures for survivors in San Francisco!

If this story moves you, consider supporting SafeHouse’s survivor-centered programs. Your involvement—whether through giving, volunteering, or spreading awareness—helps ensure that women and their children have access to safe housing, healing spaces, and lasting support.
