A New Door to Safety: SafeHouse Launches 90-Day Emergency Shelter Beds

Every expansion at SafeHouse begins with listening.
And one need we have heard again and again is urgent: Women fleeing violence need access to safe shelter immediately.
That is why, in January 2026, SafeHouse launched one of the most meaningful expansions to our Transitional Housing program since it first opened in 1998: the addition of two new 90-day emergency shelter beds. These beds are available within our Transitional House for unaccompanied adult women who have experienced homelessness alongside trafficking or exploitation, and they offer a supportive environment for survivors to begin healing and work closely with our team to build a path toward longer-term housing and long-term stability.

Meeting an Urgent Need
Before launching these beds, one of SafeHouse’s primary options for immediate placements has been our Emergency Hotel Stay program. This program remains a critical part of our continuum of care, particularly for women with children or survivors who are seeking a more private and independent stay.
But hotel stays might not meet every survivor’s needs. They are often short-term, and because clients stay independently, there can be fewer opportunities for connection, community, and 24/7 support.
What Happens During the 90 Days
Women entering the 90-day emergency shelter program receive the same level of care as residents in the Transitional House. During their stay, they work closely with case managers to access resources, build a housing plan, and connect with the broader network of support available.
Each resident’s next step is shaped around her needs. Some may transition into longer-term housing within SafeHouse. Others may move into trusted partner programs. And when more time or support is needed, SafeHouse continues working with each client to ensure no one leaves without a safe place to go.
What makes these new beds so meaningful is not only the shelter they provide, but the environment surrounding them. Residents placed in the 90-day shelter program enter into the existing community at the Transitional House: a confidential, communal residence housing 8-10 women at a time, rooted in stability, trust, and support. There, residents have access to shared meals, consistent routines, case management, and 24/7 support from SafeHouse counselors and from other women at the house.
For women arriving in crisis, this kind of environment can be deeply grounding, and what we have seen has already been encouraging. We are seeing residents who are stabilizing quickly and leaving their 90-day stay prepared to transition into longer-term housing. Most importantly, women are navigating a moment of crisis surrounded by a supportive community that believes in them every step of the way.
An Early Sign of What Is Possible
In April 2026, our first two residents completed their 90-day stays and successfully moved into longer-term housing. This early success reflects our day one goal: To not only provide a bed for 90 days, but to truly help each woman heal from their experiences and break a cycle of homelessness for good.
To SafeHouse, these beds represent more than an expansion. They reflect our ongoing commitment to growing the continuum of care available to women experiencing homelessness in San Francisco, meeting survivors where they are, and responding to the needs they identify.
Because at the heart of everything we do is a simple belief: every woman deserves a safe place to land, to heal, and to begin again.
