“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion . . .” – Nelson Mandela Dear Friends,
Over the weekend, white nationalists rallied in Charlottesville, Virginia. A car plowed into a group of counterprotestors, killing a woman and injuring dozens. Let's call it for what it is - an act of domestic terrorism. The wave of violence that has occurred over the past few months and particularly in Charlottesville is unimaginable – but sadly, not unexpected. Our country has had a history of oppressing marginalized groups. But we have also had a history of lifting each other up. Over 60% of the women SafeHouse serves are from communities of color -- the same communities that the white nationalists proclaim to be against. Communities of color often carry the burden of explaining their own experiences of racism and talking about the impact of hate crimes. There is no place for hate in our community. It’s time to rise up, take a stand, and be on the right side of history. Here are three things you can do as an ally today:
San Francisco SafeHouse is committed to advocating for equity and racial justice because until we are willing to confront these acts of violence, we will be unable to fulfill our mission to end all forms of exploitation. Thank you for your time and support of SafeHouse. Sincerely, Jessica Li Executive Director San Francisco SafeHouse |
