FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
SafeHouse is in a confidential location in San Francisco. It is a 24/7 transitional housing facility. Due to safety and legal concerns, we keep the identities of the women and the actual location of the safe house strictly confidential.
HOW ARE SURVIVORS REFERRED TO SAFEHOUSE?
We partner with community agencies that work with women who are homeless, prostituted, trafficked, and struggling with addiction and alcoholism. These include county jails, law enforcement, domestic violence shelters, homeless shelters, and substance abuse programs. We conduct outreach both on the street and to partner agencies to identify and advocate for survivors of commercial sex work. To refer yourself or a client to SafeHouse, contact us at info@sfsafehouse.org or call us at (415) 643-7861.
HOW MANY WOMEN CAN STAY AT THE HOME?
Our home can house up to 10 women at one time. When the house is full, we place potential residents on a wait list and work with other agencies to provide the women with interim housing.
HOW LONG CAN THE WOMEN STAY?
We offer long-term transitional housing, and women can stay at SafeHouse up to 18 months and thus fully benefit from our highly individualized, supportive services. This is considerably longer than what is available at short-term transitional shelters. This extended period is necessary to help our residents achieve emotional stability, heal from trauma and violence, maintain sobriety, acquire economic and life skills, access legal aid and other needed services, and connect to job opportunities.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE WOMEN AFTER THEY EXIT THE PROGRAM?
Residents are ready to leave and graduate from the program once they are emotionally stable, financially functional and have a safe place to go to. Some women choose reunite with their families while others live independently, continuing their education and/or working at jobs. Graduates are able to continue receiving case management and after-care support for a period following their stay.
